What it is

Niacinamide is a water-soluble form of vitamin B3. In skincare it is used to support the skin barrier and is a common choice in routines for oily and combination skin.

It is stable, works at a skin-neutral pH and mixes with almost everything else on the shelf, which is why it turns up in so many formulas. More is not better: most published work uses between 2% and 5%.

How we use it

At 5% in a light water serum, with 1% zinc PCA. We stay at 5% because higher strengths are more likely to cause flushing.

How to use

Morning or evening, after cleansing and before moisturiser. A few drops is enough for the whole face.

Pairs well with

Zinc PCA, glycerin and ceramides. It can be layered with vitamin C, retinal or exfoliating acid.

Cautions

Some people notice temporary redness or warmth. If that happens, use it once a day or every other day.
