Retinal for beginners: start slow
Retinal is a form of vitamin A used in evening skincare. It is potent in small amounts, which is why our serum comes in two strengths: 0.05% and 0.1%.
Which strength to start with
If you have never used a vitamin A product, start with 0.05%. Stay there for at least eight weeks before deciding whether to move up. Many people never need to.
A four-week start
- Weeks 1 and 2: two evenings a week, not consecutive.
- Weeks 3 and 4: every other evening.
- After that: nightly if your skin is comfortable.
How to apply it
Cleanse, dry your face fully, apply two or three drops, then follow with moisturiser. Applying to damp skin can make it feel stronger than you want.
What to expect
Some dryness or flaking in the first weeks is common. If skin becomes sore or stays red, stop and let it settle before trying again less often.
What not to combine it with
Skip exfoliating acids on the nights you use retinal. Use vitamin C in the morning instead of layering the two.
Who should not use it
Do not use retinal if you are pregnant, trying to conceive or breastfeeding. Ask a doctor or pharmacist if you are unsure.
Sunscreen
Use a broad-spectrum SPF every morning while using retinal.
