Why SPF is the last step, every day
If you only keep one step of a routine, keep sunscreen. It is the last thing you apply in the morning and the product you will use the most of.
How much to use
Two finger lengths covers the face and neck. Most people use about half that, which means they get less protection than the label states.
When to reapply
Every two hours when you are outdoors, and after swimming or sweating. Indoors and away from windows, a morning application is usually enough for the day.
Mineral or tinted?
Daily SPF 50 is untinted and leaves no cast on most skin tones. Tinted SPF 30 uses zinc oxide with iron oxides, which add a sheer tint in five shades. Choose by finish: neither replaces the other on a long day outside.
Common mistakes
- Relying on the SPF in make-up, which is applied far too thinly.
- Missing the ears, hairline and neck.
- Using last year's bottle. Check the expiry date.
Sunscreen is one part of sun protection. Shade and clothing matter as well.
