How to layer skincare, thinnest to thickest
Skincare routines get complicated quickly. Most of the complication can be removed with one rule: apply products from the thinnest texture to the thickest, and finish with sunscreen in the morning.
Why texture decides the order
Watery products spread and absorb fast. Creams and oils sit on the surface and slow down whatever goes on after them. If a serum goes on over a cream, more of it stays on top of the cream instead of reaching skin.
A morning order that works
- Cleanser. A gel cleanser on damp skin, rinsed well.
- Serum. Three drops of Vitamin C Serum pressed in with your palms.
- Moisturiser. A light lotion while skin is still slightly damp.
- Sunscreen. Two finger lengths for face and neck. Always last.
An evening order that works
- Oil cleanser on dry skin to lift sunscreen, then rinse.
- Treatment. Retinal or exfoliating acid, not both on the same night.
- Cream. A richer moisturiser to finish.
How long to wait between steps
You do not need a timer. Wait until the last product no longer feels wet, usually under a minute, then apply the next.
When to break the rule
Sunscreen always goes last in the morning, even if your moisturiser is thicker. And if a product stings, stop using it rather than burying it under more layers.
