Ingredient

Mandelic acid

Also known as: AHA, alpha hydroxy acid

A larger, slower alpha hydroxy acid, originally derived from bitter almonds. Used alongside lactic acid.

Typical percentage
2%
INCI name
Mandelic Acid
Benefit

What it is

Mandelic acid is the largest of the common AHAs. Because of its size it moves into the skin slowly, which makes it one of the gentler exfoliating acids. It is also partly oil-soluble, so it is a frequent choice for oilier skin.

On its own it is slow. We use it as the second acid, next to lactic acid.

How we use it

At 2% in Gentle Exfoliating Acid, alongside 5% lactic acid.

How to use

Evening, two or three times a week, on clean dry skin. Follow with moisturiser.

Pairs well with

Lactic acid and niacinamide. Sunscreen every morning.

Cautions

Do not use on the same evening as retinal. AHAs make skin more sensitive to the sun, so use sunscreen daily.
