What it is

Glycerin is a small, water-loving molecule found naturally in skin. As a humectant it draws water towards itself and holds it in the outer layer, which is what makes skin feel hydrated rather than tight.

It is one of the oldest and most studied skincare ingredients. Above about 10% it starts to feel sticky, so the amount matters as much as the name.

How we use it

Between 5% and 8% depending on the product: 5% in Daily Gel Cleanser and Everyday Body Lotion, 6% in Light Moisturiser and 8% in Hand Cream.

How to use

Works best on slightly damp skin, with a cream or oil on top to slow water loss.

Pairs well with

Emollients and barrier lipids: squalane, shea butter and ceramides.

Cautions

None known for most people.
